UC Food Services App
As a student at the University of Cincinnati, I noticed many unnecessary inconveniences while experiencing the food courts firsthand and began to brainstorm cost effective and simple ways to improve our food services. As a result, I designed a food services app for my first UC honors program project.
Role: UX/UI Designer

Timeline: 15 weeks

Spring 2022
Survey
A survey was conducted to gather student opinions of UC’s dining services. Pamphlets with a QR code linking to the survey were hung near dining halls. According to survey data, 100% of the 18 respondents agreed that a food services app would be useful. Responses included each year group from 1st year to graduate student, with first years being the largest majority. This is to be expected, given 1st years are the only grade year required to hold a meal plan.
Competitor Analysis
There are no direct competitors due to this app being dedicated to UC students only and there is no app out there for that already. However, it is possible that other colleges or schools could have had an app dedicated to their food services, or an app could be adapted for other colleges.

In addition, the UC food services website was also analyzed. The website for UC’s dining services was found to be subpar and lacking in practical UI. It did not supply much information and is infrequently updated. Research supports a need for improvement, and while a website update could be done instead, having an app ensures faster daily access.
Information Architecture
This site map was created to organize the structure and examine how the sections related to each other. The app is able to be split into 5 main functions, with the dining services section being the most utilized.
Aesthetic Direction
Reuse of the University of Cincinnati’s brand colors and font was necessary to maintain a professional and official feel.
Conclusion
My research indicates a need for a solution to the current relationship students have with UC Food Services before arrival. The design I have made has the potential to change that for the better. The app could be expanded on, and include things such as ways to order your food online, vote for and add your input on the meals, have specials pages, etc. In addition, I plan to communicate with UC food services and present them my idea so it can become a reality for students.
Learnings
This was my first ever UX/UI project, so I have learned a lot through the process. Here are a few of my takeaways:
-Save more of the progress work.
-Spend more time on establishing format to avoid wasting time on fixing avoidable consistency problems.
-I should have gathered more constructive criticism, whether it be from friends, professionals, or both.
-Being able to utilize the colors and font from UC’s pre-existing branding helped to simplify the project, but it was also something that I had to ensure that I did not break away from.
This project is not officially associated with the University of Cincinnati.
